Youth Programs While the Lions club has long been noted for aid to the visually impaired, they also recognize their duty to provide strong leadership values to our youth. The Capital City club has numerous youth oriented programs: Peace Posters - “Peace Without Borders” is the theme of the 2005-06 Peace Poster contest which is administered by Lions Club International. Locally, we sponsor the program for children who are 11, 12 or 13 before November 15 (which is the deadline for a club to submit a poster to the district governor). Through this contest students are encouraged to depict their interpretation of the annual theme. The Grand Prize Winner receives a trip to the award ceremony at Lions Day with the United Nations in New York City as well as a cash award of $2,500. Twenty-three Merit Award Winners receive a cash award of $500 and a certificate of achievement. Capital City Lions Club is very proud this year to have sponsored the contest at Monte del Sol Charter School & The Academy for Technology & the Classics (ATC). Youth Exchange - Every year since 1961 young people have participated in the Lions International Youth Exchange Program. The goal of this program is to foster a unique cultural experience in which our youth develop a spirit of understanding across borders. In 2003 we entertained two students from England and assisted with sponsoring two Santa Fe students to England. State Honor Band - Multiple District 40 sponsors a statewide band composed of high school students througout New Mexico. High school band directors thoughout the state submit the names of students who wish to participate. This band goes to Lions International Conventions held in our country. Wilson Scholarship - Johnny Wilson was a charter member of the Capital City club. He was a partner in Wilson Transfer & Storage, and played steel guitar in western bands around town. His group often played for Lions functions. This scholarship program to Santa Fe Community College came about through a request from his family that donations on his behalf be utilized in this manner. The club has added additional money over the years to make this a full scholarship program. Liberty Day - This program provides booklets containing the Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution to our school students. We also arrange for a field trip to the Roundhouse for our youth to see our state government in action. This program hopes to instill civic pride (and perhaps future Lions). Little league team - The Capital City Lions club has sponsored a Little League team for many years. If you or your group would like further information on any of these programs, click here, and address your inquiry to "Youth Programs". |
